學術研究成果的典藏與傳播是大學圖書館支援教學與研究的重要工作，臺灣學術機構典藏的發展為前述工作奠定的重要基石。機構典藏的未來必須擴展典藏的內容，由研究成果進一步涵蓋研究資料，以完整典藏學術研究過程的上游、中游、與下游資料，這與目前越來越受重視的E-Research、E-Science、或是Data Curation的概念完全吻合。
美國研究圖書館學會(ARL)在面對21世紀學者、研究者與學生的需求，於2011年進行The New Roles for New Times 系列的研究調查，其中Digital Curation 與Data Curation已成為大學及學術圖書館的新任務與新角色之一。為掌握此項新發展趨勢，臺大圖書館與教育部北二區區域教學資源中心特邀請伊利諾大學與賓州州立大學專家學者，舉辦「E-Research：新世代學術研究之利器」研討會，歡迎踴躍參加。
